Concrete is a cheap, versatile, strong, and easily customizable material, which is why it is so popular in residential paving where both durability and appeal matter. All homeowners want to own a unique and elegant surface to boost the curb appeal and, thereby, their home’s property value. Asphalt pavement, however, have a classic look.

Within concrete paving, there are various types that you can choose from, the two most common ones being concrete pavers or solid concrete. Solid concrete is also known as poured concrete or concrete slabs.

What is the difference between concrete pavers and solid concrete?

Despite being made from concrete, both paving materials are very different from one another. The biggest difference being, pavers are manufactured in a factory and bought, while concrete slabs are made from a concrete mixture being poured and dried on-site.

Pavers aesthetically look better than concrete slabs. Getting the same finish from stamped or poured concrete that you can get from pavers made in molds is impossible.

Also, there is more variety in pavers. Pavers can be made to look like tiles, wood, or can feature any other design and color. However, it is easier to cover an irregularly paved area with solid concrete than with pavers because they come in standard shapes and sizes.

A concrete slab is one solid surface, while different pavers need to be installed to form a pavement. Therefore, correcting any issues after installation is more manageable with pavers. But with solid concrete, you have to remove and repave the whole pavement to fix even the tiniest problems.

The cost per square foot of concrete slabs is generally lesser than pavers. In fact, you might have to pay 10% to 15% more for paving stones than solid concrete.

However, if you want something fancier for your property, it is cheaper to get pavers than getting a stamped concrete pavement. However, an important thing to keep in mind is that while a concrete slab is more affordable upfront than pavers, its long-term costs of replacements and repair outweighs what you saved initially.

Which is better for your residential project?

There is no right choice between solid concrete and concrete pavers; there is, however, a perfect choice, which is solely based on you.

Each of the two options has its own pros and cons, some of which we have already explained above. Therefore, the only thing that can make one of the options viable is your own requirements and budget. Within budget, you need to consider both the initial cost and maintenance cost of each and cross-check them against your affordability.
